Paralegal

NCLA is seeking a dynamic professional to provide paralegal services and research in support of its nationwide litigation and appellate practice. We anticipate hiring two people at this time. The new hires will overlap with NCLA’s existing paralegals to learn the ropes from them before they head to law school this fall.

Hours and Location

This is a full-time position located at NCLA’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia (Ballston area). This is not a remote working position. The two paralegal positions jointly support 15 attorneys.

Qualifications

Values aligned with NCLA mission to protect constitutional freedoms from violations by the Administrative State;

Superb writing, grammatical, cite checking, proofreading, and copyediting skills;

Inquisitive, entrepreneurial, and analytical mind attuned to client representation;

Ability to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced litigation environment and always meet deadlines;

Exceptional organizational and time-management skills and attention to detail;

Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and associated tools;

Understanding of and/or willingness to locate and research local filing rules, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure, agency, and state rules;

Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team devoted to hard work and collegiality;

Paralegal certificate or at least two (2) years professional experience as a paralegal at a law firm, government agency, or legal nonprofit preferred but not required;

Strong legal research skills and command of Westlaw, Law Toolbox, MyCase, CM/ECF, and PACER preferred but not required;

Thorough knowledge of The Bluebook and other legal style guides preferred but not required;

Proficiency in brief formatting and building tables of contents and tables of authorities preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

Format and assemble final briefs and other court documents for filing in electronic and paper format, across many state and federal jurisdictions, trial and appellate courts, and agencies;

Set up, maintain, organize, close, and archive electronic and paper files;

Occasionally perform discovery-related document review, inspection, management, and indexing;

Occasionally draft correspondence, deposition summaries, discovery requests;

Serve as internal docket clerk, maintaining centralized calendar of case, client, and court deadlines;

Research and adhere to court admission requirements, local rules, ethics rules, protective orders, filing requirements, service of process, and necessary attestations;

Make logistical arrangements for meetings, depositions, court reporting, travel;

Communicate with courts, government agencies, clients, and outside counsel as requested by attorneys;

Work with printers, process servers, and other vendors to ensure timely delivery of all filings;

Participate in weekly staff and litigation meetings to help prioritize work on pending matters;

Liaise with the communications team to ensure all filings are up to date and available on NCLA’s website;

Undertake other administrative tasks pertinent to the litigation function, as needed.
