What were your duties as an NCLA clerk?
I worked on a variety of research projects in cases challenging SEC regulations, CPSC statements about a product, a potential cert petition involving Sixth Amendment jury trials. I was also able to draft a motion in limine for a case in Federal District Court.
What did you most enjoy about your clerkship?
I enjoyed dedicating most of my time to challenging the government on behalf of individuals whose rights have been denied. The work NCLA does is crucial to protecting civil rights for everyone and I was grateful to be a part of the work this summer.
What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?
I learned how much certain agencies try to push the limits of their delegated power. It really struck me how often agencies are really blowing way past the stop signs laid out by Congress in the statutes authorizing the agency.
How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?
Being at NCLA and working with a variety of excellent litigators gave me an opportunity to see how litigators think and strategize when making a case for their client. I hope to take much of what I learned into a litigation career.
Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future?
Be ready to throw yourself into lots of projects. There is no shortage of interesting and important projects to work on, even in ten short weeks.
