What were your duties as an NCLA clerk?

I completed legal research into constitutional law issues and drafted memos to support cases in different stages of litigation. I assisted in the drafting of a complaint, amended complaint, and amicus curiae brief, as well as the development of discovery strategy. I also explored possible cases for NCLA to pursue in the future.

What did you most enjoy about your clerkship?

I most enjoyed getting to know the incredible litigators and staff at NCLA, and my fellow clerks. The work they do every day helps ensure that individual liberties continue to exist for all Americans.

What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?

I learned that admin law is constantly evolving (especially now, after an NCLA win in Relentless!). The breadth and complexity of admin law, and how much it touches the lives of Americans, was also eye-opening.

How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?

The legal research and writing skills I’ve developed while at NCLA will be valuable in my summer associate position next year. Additionally, several of the litigators at NCLA and several judges presented talks to us over the summer which included a wealth of career advice that I will take with me as I am beginning my own career.

Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future?

My advice to students interested in clerking at NCLA is to read Philip Hamburger’s book, Is Administrative Law Unlawful?, as it will give you a great overview of NCLA’s mission.
