What were your duties as an NCLA intern?

I wrote legal memoranda on issues of administrative and constitutional law to assist attorneys in the litigation process. I also contributed to a demand letter to enjoin a city in the State of Florida from implementing an unconstitutional surveillance program.

What did you most enjoy about your internship?

I most enjoyed the opportunity to learn about and participate in litigation. It was fulfilling to see clients experience positive outcomes partially as a result of my work.

What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?

I was shocked by the extent to which administrative agencies exercise unchecked control over the lives of ordinary Americans every day. The courts afford great deference to nearly every action an agency takes.

How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?

I will no doubt apply the legal research and analysis skills I built throughout my clerkship for the rest of my career. My clerkship also provided me with a strong foundation in administrative law that will be helpful in nearly any legal field I enter after graduation.

Any advice for other students who want to intern at NCLA in the future?

Brush up on administrative law and learn as much about litigation as possible before you start. Also, have an open mind and be proactive in asking for feedback.
