What were your duties as an NCLA clerk?

I worked with NCLA attorneys on issues involving agency interpretations, discrimination, and the nondelegation doctrine. I was also able to draft a motion in limine for a lawsuit in Federal Court.

What did you most enjoy about your clerkship?

I really enjoyed learning about the inner workings of administrative law and working on cases of the magnitude handled by NCLA. Getting to directly help people who have had their civil liberties infringed was a very rewarding experience.

What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?

I learned just how much administrative agencies tend to test the limits of their powers when left unchecked. I also learned a lot about different legal theories that can be advanced within the administrative law field, especially given the dramatic changes that have happened recently.

How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?

I learned a lot about how litigators strategize when it comes to trying cases, and how those strategies shift throughout the life cycle of litigation. I learned invaluable research and writing skills this summer that will stick with me throughout the rest of my career.

Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future?

Stay aware of the current state of affairs in administrative law, as it is ever-changing and unpredictable. Be willing to take on as many projects as you can, since you will never stop learning from the talented team of litigators at NCLA.
