What were your duties as an NCLA clerk? I worked closely with NCLA attorneys on a variety of legal research and writing projects in support of NCLA’s ongoing litigation efforts, including projects involving complex statutory issues and the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments.
What did you most enjoy about your clerkship? An NCLA clerkship is a rare find. Substantive litigation work is available from day one, and there is never a shortage of opportunities for hands-on experience. But most importantly, NCLA attorneys sincerely care about the growth and development of all the law clerks, and they consciously take the time to share their experience and guidance to ensure every clerk has the opportunity to advance both professionally and personally.
What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law? Administrative agencies may not always intend or even understand the downstream effects of the rules and regulations they promulgate, but they all too often ignore these important considerations, and they regularly fail to consider whether they even have the constitutional or statutory authority to act in the first place.
How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career? The continued development of my legal research and writing skills is advantageous in its own right. But more importantly, the substantive experience in research and argument strategy through all stages of litigation will be exceedingly helpful in any field of practice in the future.
Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future? Your experience can be whatever you make of it. There is so much opportunity to learn, gain experience, and become a better and more capable future lawyer. The exceptional attorneys at NCLA did not get where they are by accident, and each opportunity to learn from their guidance and experience is certain to lead to the personal and professional development necessary to practice law with excellence. So take advantage of everything a summer clerkship here has to offer!
