What were your duties as an NCLA clerk?

I primarily assisted with research assignments for Sheng’s cases, but I also had the unique opportunity to work with Sheng and my co-clerk Lucy Collins to draft an amicus letter before the California Supreme Court.

What did you most enjoy about your clerkship?

I most enjoyed getting out of the classroom and assisting real attorneys with real legal work, especially in areas of law that are crucial to upholding the founding principles of our constitutional republic.

What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?

That Chevron was only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the overreach of the administrative state. Our victory in Relentless was phenomenal, and it was exciting to be clerking for NCLA at the time of the decision. But agencies will still be up to all kinds of funny business, meaning that there are countless other ways we need to fight to protect our constitutional freedoms.

How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?

I’m planning to work in administrative and regulatory law going forward and NCLA provided me with an invaluable real-world primer from which to start my career. It felt like I learned more in a summer with NCLA than in any of my 1L courses.

Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future?

If you can, take Legislation and Regulation and study hard for it. Also focus on your legal research and writing course. At least for me, many of my assignments drew most directly on the skills I learned in this course, and in hindsight I wish I had focused more on it!
