What were your duties as an NCLA intern? I provided research for the litigators and helped outline, draft, and revise complaints, motions, and appellate briefs. I also helped one of the trial teams prepare and organize exhibits.
What did you most enjoy about your internship? I enjoyed being so involved in litigating cases and being able to learn how NCLA litigators strategize, write, and argue. Clerks are given a lot of responsibility and trust; it is a fantastic way to pick up practical experience.
What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law? I was shocked at how expansive and invasive the administrative state is and the level of deference given by courts to agency action.
How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career? I will use the research and writing skills I built this summer in nearly every aspect of my professional career. Working on the strategic and procedural aspects of litigation at NCLA will help me work across a variety of cases in the future.
Any advice for other students who want to intern at NCLA in the future? Become the best legal writer you can be; you will use those skills every day and you never know when part of your memo will end up in the final brief. Think creatively and be proactive.
