What were your duties as an NCLA clerk?  I prepared legal memos to answer research questions that the attorneys had for their cases. I mostly researched issues concerning constitutional law, civil procedure, statutory interpretation, and administrative law. I also drafted sections of motions for a variety of cases. My favorite memory is seeing how my draft arguments were revised and incorporated into an amicus brief which NCLA filed in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit

What did you most enjoy about your clerkship?

I most enjoyed learning from my fellow clerks. Since clerks are hired from many different law schools, and those law schools teach the law slightly differently, I was able to learn from others’ legal perspectives, fill gaps in my own knowledge, and deepen my understanding of the law by working with my fellow clerks.

I also enjoyed the networking opportunities we received. Among other opportunities, we met privately with judges and received a tour of the U.S. Supreme Court.

What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?

I found it interesting that administrative law connects with most other areas of law.Since many industries are regulated by administrative agencies, knowing the basics of administrative law is important regardless of one’s chosen legal practice.

How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?

I will draw on the administrative law experience I’ve gained to advise my future clients across a range of industries, helping them navigate complex regulatory environments with confidence.

Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future?

You should learn the basics of administrative law and learn about some of NCLA’s cases so that you have a good understanding of the kind of work that NCLA does.
