What were your duties as an NCLA clerk?
I had the opportunity to assist NCLA’s attorneys in a variety of tasks, doing in-depth research into topics ranging from qualified immunity to the powers of the D.C. Court of Appeals to drafting a motion for class certification for the Franey case.
What did you most enjoy about your clerkship?
I loved learning from experienced practitioners and my brilliant fellow clerks alike.
What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?
It has been fascinating to learn how after decades of barely checked deference, the courts have finally taken steps to implement checks, first in recognizing issues like the Major Questions Doctrine, and most recently through overturning Chevron. It was an honor to further work with NCLA to check the actions of rogue administrative agencies.
How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?
The skills I have learned in research, drafting, and above all high level legal analysis have been invaluable.
Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future?
Clerking at NCLA is a tremendous opportunity to learn from a truly fantastic team of attorneys! I’d advise clerks to take full advantage of the array of great programming available to us, and to try to attend arguments and depositions to the extent possible: it is always great to see top attorneys in action!
