What were your duties as an NCLA clerk?
I evaluated amicus brief requests, conducted document review, worked on a motion, edited a complaint, and performed legal research on administrative and constitutional law topics.
What did you most enjoy about your clerkship?
I most enjoyed getting to know the people at NCLA! Everyone has such an interesting background and a true passion for NCLA’s mission. In particular, the opportunity to not just work with the attorneys, but also learn about their careers and seek their advice, was invaluable.
What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?
I was shocked by the sheer scope of Admin Law. I think very few Americans realize there is this mammoth arm of the government that reaches into every area of life, with extensive power that too often goes largely unchecked.
How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?
I have really valued getting exposure to real, substantive legal work and practicing attorneys so early in my legal career. I’ve learned so much about litigation practice, how a law firm runs, and the nonprofit world in D.C.
Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future?
Definitely spend time exploring the website! There are so many great resources like articles, podcasts, and videos (in addition to Professor Hamburger’s books, of course!) to learn about NCLA’s impactful work and administrative law in general.
