What were your duties as an NCLA clerk?  

As an NCLA clerk, I had a wide range of duties. I conducted research for amicus briefs, drafted motion briefs, authored a blogpost about state professional licensing boards, and penned legal research memos.

What did you most enjoy about your clerkship?

I most enjoyed the opportunity to meet several federal appellate judges. They were all very charming, informative people who imparted a great deal of wisdom to all the summer clerks and helped us understand what judges expect of the advocates who argue before them.

What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?

I learned how the mechanics of commenting on agency actions function in the context of the notice-and-comment process. Discovering this knowledge helped me understand how commenting can be used to strategically craft an administrative record favorable for litigation.

How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?

Since I would like to become a regulatory attorney, I am hoping to employ in my future career the same exact skills I honed at NCLA. In particular, this job has increased my fluency with the Federal Register and improved my ability to cite administrative materials, things which will serve me for the rest of my life!

Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future?

As with any job, you should always work hard and be curious—have a permanent, voracious appetite for skill, insight, and experience. Most importantly, be open to making mistakes and then learning from them. Also, if you’re interested in writing amicus briefs that can be influential in litigation, NCLA is a great place to work. The attorneys here are extremely skilled and have written very persuasive amicus briefs. They can teach you what they know and help you become a better legal writer.
