What were your duties as an NCLA clerk?  

Over the course of my summer at NCLA, I engaged with a variety of legal topics. I drafted memos on public policy initiatives and current administrative law orders, assisted with discovery responses, conducted legal research, and cite checked briefs.

What did you most enjoy about your clerkship?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my summer at NCLA was the variety of legal issues I got to explore. Many of the projects I worked on involved agencies or legal topics I was unfamiliar with, which made each assignment a valuable learning experience. Beyond the substantive work, the attorneys at NCLA were incredibly welcoming and generous with their time and expertise.

What interesting thing(s) did you learn about Administrative Law?

Aside from quickly realizing that I needed a cheat sheet to keep track of all the agency acronyms, my time at NCLA offered me a glimpse into the numerous ways the administrative state exercises power over Americans. Regulations impact our daily lives in ways many of us barely notice, but NCLA is on the front lines protecting the rights many Americans don’t even realize are in jeopardy.

How might you use what you’ve learned later in your professional career?

Along with gaining hands-on legal experience and building great professional relationships, my time at NCLA has especially strengthened my research skills— an ability that will be key to my success as a future litigator.

Any advice for other students who want to clerk at NCLA in the future?

Stay up to date on what’s happening in the courts (SCOTUSBlog is a great resource). Also, say yes to every opportunity that comes your way! The attorneys at NCLA are incredibly generous with their time and frequently invite clerks to events around D.C.—make the most of it and go!
